The Sauvignon Quintessenz wafts up with a pretty bouquet of lemon zest and gooseberry complicated by hints of crushed stone. It’s silky and supple on the palate, with vibrant acidity motivating tart orchard fruits. This leaves a sour citrus tension and a saline mineral twang while finishing potent yet fresh.

    2018 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Schlossberg Spätlese
    € 30,00 INC. VAT The Zeltinger Schlossberg is the slope adjacent to the Zeltinger sundial. So top of the top. It is the steepest section of this slope from which the wine is obtained, over 80 years old root-true vines in single stake education with the most extreme orientation. Unlike the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, the Schlossberg is more clearly at home in the slate. The nose is clearly dominated by flint, wet slate. Stone, minerality and salt in the foreground. The whole thing is underpinned by a flower meadow, mirabelle, light reneklode, also a bit of quince, a touch of orange peel and lime underneath. More to the mineral than to the citrus fruit. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2021 offers a less ripe profile compared to both the 2019 and 2020. Instead, it showcases freshness and energy, which should appeal to readers looking for a leaner Condrieu expression. Nonetheless, it stays true to the expressive Guigal style, ending with good drive on the nuanced finale.

    The 2022 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru blends its reductive, flinty smokiness with lemon zest on the nose. With more air, white and yellow peach start smiling through and get stronger and juicier on the palate. The pale peach juiciness appears in full purity on the palate, framed with a pleasantly astringent pithiness that makes the mouth water. More peach and fruit and fin freshness are just within reach.
