Manfred Ing and his team at Querciabella presented a terrific set of wines. The move towards greater energy and vibrancy that started a handful of years ago is evident. It’s hard to know where to start, as all of these wines are deserving of a mention. The Mongrana is a superb value, while at the top end, the 2016 Camartina really dazzles. But if I were going to start out with just one wine to explore the estate, it would be the Chianti Classico, a model of understatement and elegance.

The 2018 Batàr is perfumed and gracious, with lovely orchard fruit, chamomile and floral notes that lift effortlessly from the glass. A wine of total precision and nuance, the 2018 is simply exquisite today. Stylistically it is a bit more perfumed and lighter than is the norm.

The palate is alive with peachy sweetness, juicy and rose petal tinged, beautifully rounded with a frame of bitter orange zest, rich but well-contoured. The zestiness and pithiness counter the 34 g/L of residual sugar, adding their lovely bitterness to this gently sweet wine. Together, they make the mouth water. (Off-Dry)

Honeysuckle and spring blossom add an enticing floral lift. Medium-bodied and refreshing, the 2021 offers a less ripe profile compared to both the 2019 and 2020. Instead, it showcases freshness and energy, which should appeal to readers looking for a leaner Condrieu expression. Nonetheless, it stays true to the expressive Guigal style, ending with good drive on the nuanced finale.
