Manfred Ing and his team at Querciabella presented a terrific set of wines. The move towards greater energy and vibrancy that started a handful of years ago is evident. It’s hard to know where to start, as all of these wines are deserving of a mention. The Mongrana is a superb value, while at the top end, the 2016 Camartina really dazzles. But if I were going to start out with just one wine to explore the estate, it would be the Chianti Classico, a model of understatement and elegance.

The 2018 Batàr is perfumed and gracious, with lovely orchard fruit, chamomile and floral notes that lift effortlessly from the glass. A wine of total precision and nuance, the 2018 is simply exquisite today. Stylistically it is a bit more perfumed and lighter than is the norm.

It is the steepest section of this slope from which the wine is obtained, over 80 years old root-true vines in single stake education with the most extreme orientation. Unlike the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, the Schlossberg is more clearly at home in the slate. The nose is clearly dominated by flint, wet slate. Stone, minerality and salt in the foreground. With more air, white and yellow peach start smiling through and get stronger and juicier on the palate. The pale peach juiciness appears in full purity on the palate, framed with a pleasantly astringent pithiness that makes the mouth water. More peach and fruit and fin freshness are just within reach.
