Giorgio Rivetti and long-time winemaker Stephan Mazetta have really refined their wines in recent years, using less French oak and a lighter hand generally. The results are evident in wines that have never been better.
Character:
Vineyard in Neive on the southeast with a sandy soil. As a result, the wines are already accessible in their youth. Vines of 40 years old. Maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks after which a maturation on second-year oaks for 20 months.
Producer:
One of the greatest names from Piedmont and the Italian wine world. Has nestled next to Gaja in terms of reputation. Can be counted among the modernists (use of barriques and roto fermenters). Started in Castaglone Lanze, in the heart of the Moscato d’Asti area. This was also one of their first wines along with the Barbera Ca di PIan. In early 2000, a winery was added in Grinzano Cavour for the Barolo’s and a winery in Tuscany near Casanova. Eventually, Contratto was also acquired in Canelli. 75% of the vineyards are biodynamically cultivated and partly due to the age of the vines the yields are low.
Area:
Piedmont, literally ‘at the foot of the mountains’ includes a large wine region in northwestern Italy, southeast of the city of Turin. It is a rugged area, sheltered by the Alps with a harsh climate, very hilly, various soil types, strongly agricultural with many small wineries.
