This year’s visit to Guigal brought some intriguing news. To start with, the 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Reynarde will be the inaugural vintage of the fourth “La” within the iconic Guigal line-up. Named after the stream running between Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, the grapes are sourced from a 1.6-hectare steep plot within the Fongeant lieu-dit. After new vines were first planted between 2015 and 2019, Philippe Guigal bottled a single barrel separately as of the 2019 vintage. To provide better context and understanding before tasting the inaugural 2022 La Reynarde, he poured the 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintage samples for context. Each year, a greater proportion of fruit from these fairly young vines was ready to be used in the blend. While the fragrant 2019 had me thinking of a La Mouline with a little kick, tasting the more structured and denser 2020 and 2021 stylistically placed the La Reynarde closer to La Turque. Another interesting adaptation of the Guigal wines includes a change in cooperage. “More than 20 years ago, my father Marcel and I were looking for a partner to set up our family cooperage,” Guigal explained. “In 2003, we teamed up with a renowned cooper. One of the advantages of using their methods was that they made our wines more open and accessible – a great advantage in cooler years. Given the changing climate and increasingly higher temperatures, we started to feel that another solution was needed. After trying out many options, even from Austria and Slovenia, we landed on a partnership with a high-end cooperage located in Beaune. Not only do their barrels impart less vanilla flavor to our wines, but they also prevent the wines from unnecessarily opening up. The 2020 vintage saw a mixture of cooperages, while the 2021 will be the first vintage to fully show the in-depth work we achieved with this barrel change.” What has not changed is the heavy use of new oak in Guigal’s winemaking. “We stay true to the Guigal house style,” Guigal firmly points out. Having had dozens of spectacular mature Guigal wines from the past three decades, there isn’t much to hold against that stylistic choice; with the few exceptions of less ripe vintages, Guigal wines can handle the new oak. But there’s a caveat: The reds need time. In the case of the outstanding 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne, time means holding off at least until 2037 to pop the first cork. Whether or not there is a sufficient number of consumers out there willing to wait that long is a different question.

There’s so much to love about the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice. Prominent menthol, pencil shavings, blackberry compote, delicate wood smoke and crushed violets enter the stage. Sexy and polished, the 2019 sports excellent flavor concentration and wraps it all up in a resonant finale. Give it another two years in bottle.

Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but the 2019 has so much more to offer. I admire the wine’s balance and allure, both of which it has in spades. Like so many 2019s, Guado al Tasso is a wine more of energy and persistence than volume. Clean, bracing mineral notes linger on the sublime finish. The 2019 spent 18 months in barrel, 90% new. € 405,00 NO VAT (private collection)The 2021 Sassicaia is one of the best young Sassicaias I can remember tasting, certainly on par with anything in recent memory. The preference here is picking on the earlier side relative to many neighboring properties, which is one of the reasons Sassicaia is always a wine of refinement more than opulence. At the same time, Sassicaia can be light. Not in 2021. All the elements came together during a long growing season to produce a rich, deep wine that marries textural intensity with classicism. Dark cherry/plum fruit, spice, new leather, menthol, licorice and spice all race across the palate. Time in the glass brings out the wine's textural intensity and sheer power. The 2021 is one of the most concentrated Sassicaias on record. That allowed for long macerations, as long as 20 days for some Cabernets. Aging was 25 months in French oak barrels (95% French, 5% a mix of Hungarian and Slavonian wood), 40% new, 40% once-used barrels and 20% in twice-used barrels. One of the recent developments here is some bâtonnage in aging, which is used to build texture. That approach worked well in 2021. In a word: magnificent.

Highly perfumed, mineral-tinged aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, smoky bacon, olive paste and incense, along with suggestions of woodsmoke and exotic spices. Offers palate-staining, appealingly sweet and deeply concentrated blueberry, cassis, floral pastille, smoked meat, licorice and fruitcake flavors that show excellent concentration and are supported by a core of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, broad and extremely long, with resonating florality and chewy tannins that build steadily.

€ 1.512,50 NO VAT (private collection)Add to cartThe 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is magical. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from Arione, so the 2015 is 80% Francia and 20% Arione. That marks a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, which it mostly was until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was made. The combination of sites works so well. I remember tasting the 2015 as separate components and seeing what exactly the Arione piece adds, and that is aromatic explosiveness, texture and breadth. Rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco and cedar lend complexity. More than anything else, though, I am blown away by how utterly delicious the 2015 is. Of course, the 2015 will be better in time, but its pedigree is plainly evident today. Roberto Conterno gave the 2015 just five years in cask, the shortest time in wood for any Monfortino in recent memory, maybe ever. Like most producers around the world, Conterno is thinking deeply about what the optimal period of time in oak is. As for the 2015, it is a flat-out stunner in every way.
