Domaine Weinback is an iconic domaine in Alsace. The winery is housed in a former Capuchin monastery in Kaysersberg dating to the early 17th century. The monks farmed 7 hectares/17 acres of vines within the clos adjacent to the house. These were the same varieties farmed by the Faller family today: Riesling, Sylvaner, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Brothers Théodore and Jean-Baptiste Faller, tanners from Kaysersberg, bought the estate in 1898 and transitioned the family into the wine business. They started bottling their wine in the late 1920s under Château Weinbach. Théo Faller took over after the Second World War and changed the name to Domaine Weinbach. Today the estate is run by Catherine Faller and her sons Théo and Eddy Leiber-Faller. Théo Leiber-Faller joined in the early 2000s and looks after vineyards. Eddy Leiber-Faller, who joined in 2017, oversees winemaking with cellar master Ghislain Berthiaut while splitting the commercial management with his mother. They own 38 hectares/94 acres of vineyards, all within 2.5km of the domaine. The holdings are in the grand crus of Schlossberg, where they are the largest owner with 12 hectares/30 acres of vines, as well as Furstentum, Mambourg and Marckrain and in the Altenbourg lieu-dit. Catherine Faller told me years ago that the Schlossberg, with its granite rocks, is “like a diamond that cuts the wine.” The wines are amongst the most elegant and poised in Alsace. They are paradigms of varietal expression and age effortlessly. In a way, Domaine Weinbach is the guardian of the Schlossberg and its incisive Rieslings. Today, Weinbach is also one to be reckoned with when it comes to fine Pinot Noir.

2020 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir La Colline du Château

The 2020 Pinot Noir La Colline du Château is from two blocks on the lower part of the Schlossberg Grand Cru, on granite, from 50-60-year-old vines. This was made with 50% whole bunches and spent two years in just 20% of new oak. A reasonably deep color points to some sumptuousness. The nose holds red and black berries and some notions of mocha. The palate is fresher yet brimming with ripe red, juicy cherry; this is very 2020. The tannins are ripe, velvety and smooth, but they also provide some structure and freshness to counter some alcoholic power. The finish is bone-dry and has a beautiful, streamlined focus. (Bone-dry)

Dark, dense and resonant, the 2016 is a wonderfully complete wine that will provide readers with decades of pure drinking pleasure. The 2016 is especially dark and brooding, and yet the tannins are incredibly polished to the point of being perceptible. In the glass, the 2016 is complete and regal, perhaps because of the super-classic blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The pedigree of the vintage comes through in the wine's extraordinary balance and total sense of finesse. I don't think there is another wine anywhere in the world made entirely from estate fruit that can match Tignanello for quality, consistency and value within its peer group of top-flight reds.

€ 372,00 NO VAT (private collection)The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better.

Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but the 2019 has so much more to offer. I admire the wine’s balance and allure, both of which it has in spades. Like so many 2019s, Guado al Tasso is a wine more of energy and persistence than volume. Clean, bracing mineral notes linger on the sublime finish. The 2019 spent 18 months in barrel, 90% new. Red/purplish berry fruit, spice, rose petal and a touch of new French oak all build as the Pergole Torte opens with aeration. As always, Pergole shows that extra touch of richness from the selection of fruit used here, with that added texture from French oak. As appealing as the 2018 is today, it is of course a very young wine that will need years to be at its very finest.
