Modern by definition but undeniably Montalcino and Brunello in every way, Casanova di Neri has a gorgeous selection of wines heading in the market in early 2021, from the 2016 Brunellos to the 2015, late-release Cerretalto. The winery is located in the northeastern section of Montalcino, yet it tends seven different and distinct vineyards throughout the region to be able to create a balanced yet unique wine from vintage to vintage. The 2016 “White Label” Brunello is a wonderful example of this balance, once again ranking high in its peer group. On the horizon is the new Tocci vineyard acquired in the south of Montalcino. We will see its debut as a specially labeled 2018 Rosso di Montalcino named Giovanni Neri in honor of the estate’s founder; more on that wine at a later date. However, in 2023, the estate will release its first Brunello made from Tocci fruit, yet another example of Montalcino producers trying to make better use of the region’s diverse terroir. Whether you consider your palate for Brunello to be international or traditional, you really owe it to yourself to check in with Casanova di Neri.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova drawing you in with a display of exotic brown spice, mint and cedar dust. Further coaxing unlocks depths of cherry, plum, hints of dark chocolate and roses. It coasts along a medium-bodied frame with velvety richness, complemented by polished red and black fruits while contrasted by brisk acids and hints of sour citrus. This coats the teeth in concentration, as if you can feel the pulp, seeds and skins of its fruit, while a layer of fine tannin slowly grounds you back to earth. The Tenuta Nuova already has so much to give, yet it will be many years before it reaches its apex. Wow. Thinking back to my tasting of the 2015, I can’t say that the 2016 is necessarily a better wine, just a little less immediate. Either way, both wines are beautiful expressions of vintage.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there is no question the 2016 represents a pretty significant stylistic shift from the past for this bottling. Whether that is unique to the 2016 or an approach that will carry through in coming vintages remains to be seen. Objectively the 2016 feels a bit clenched and lacking the inner sweetness the Riserva has shown in the past. Crushed flowers, mint, rose petal, sweet red cherry and orange zest lend nuance to this taut, classically austere young Barolo from Scavino.

€ 372,00 NO VAT (private collection)The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better.
